HOW TO – Blocking in Alla Prima

After toning our canvas (imprimatura) in a mid value it is helpful to think “shapes” not subject. Arranging these shapes like flat puzzle pieces helps keep things uncluttered and ready for the finer details. Ask yourself what color is the lightest light and darkest dark and pick one of them to lay down first. For instance, in the dark mass of foliage surrounding the door the main color is green. The white pillars surrounding the door are white with a hint of blue. Once these main masses are painted, we can begin refining with lighter values, highlights and shadows.
